Trent Willmon's Green Chile Cheeseburgers

(CountryWeekly.com)

The "Beer Man' singer and grill master shares his take on a classic--with just enough "Texas bite!"

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 lbs. ground burger
  • 2 envelopes Lipton Onion Soup Mix (mushroom and garlic are great, too)
  • Two 4-oz. cans chopped green chiles
  • ½ stick real butter, softened to room temperature
  • 2 tbsp. dry ranch dressing mix
  • Sliced cheddar cheese

PREPARATION:
  1. In a large bowl, mix the burger, soup mix and chiles well (a potato masher works great, or use your hands).
  2. Combine the butter and ranch dressing mix.
  3. As you make patties, place a beer-top-sized dab of the butter mix in the middle of the patty and fold it over to seal the butter inside the burger.
  4. Grill to well done over a high heat and add cheese while still hot. Your buddies will be impressed!

It's All in a Name to Rodney Atkins

(GACTV.com)

June 28, 2007 — The new issue of Guideposts magazine features a cover story by Rodney Atkins in which he reveals he was willing to do almost anything to make the big time, except change his name.

Although aspiring artists often change or modify their family names to be distinctive and stand out from the crowd, Rodney refused to consider that option, even when his record company practically insisted.

"If you're a big country music fan, then my name probably sounds a little familiar to you," Rodney writes. "And not just because I've had a couple of hit singles recently. My last name has an illustrious history in the business.

"Back in 1994 I was making my first forays into Nashville from east Tennessee, where I grew up," he continues. "My new record label told me they had something they needed to discuss with me before we even got started. 'Rodney, we're going to have to do something about that name of yours. It's just too close to some folks out there who everyone already knows — Chet Atkins, Trace Adkins — you're not related, are you?"

Rodney goes on to describe how he was given up by his birth mother as a newborn and then by two adoptive couples who couldn't deal with a sick and colicky baby before he found a home.

"That family name — Atkins — is what saved me from who knows what and gave me the richly blessed life I have today," he writes. "A family has a way of healing you. I turned into just about the healthiest, happiest kid you could find in east Tennessee. I outgrew the colic, of course, but I will never outgrow my family. Because family, well, that's just about the most important thing in life. Just ask a couple by the name of Allan and Margaret Atkins."

Keith Urban's Birthday Surprise for Nicole

June 28, 2007 — Keith Urban made sure his wife Nicole Kidman's 40th birthday celebration went off with a bang last week — by lighting up the sky above Bowen, Australia.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Keith flew in to help the actress celebrate her milestone birthday on Wednesday, but she had no idea that he had gone to great lengths to organize a fireworks display for her.

A set party at restaurant Three Sixty on the Hill had been canceled, according to the Sydney Daily Telegraph, when Nicole discovered the plans. Proprietor Jenny Curtis says, "It was all canceled because Nicole found out about it and she wanted a quiet affair." Instead, Nicole, who has has been filming the movie, Australia, in Bowen, was taken to the top of Flagstaff Hill to watch the display, which included a "Happy Birthday, Nicole" set on a grid close to the ground.

The couple's celebrations continued into this week as they celebrated their first wedding anniversary on Monday. Meanwhile, Keith is the latest name to be added to the bill of the New York leg of Al Gore's Live Earth concerts on July 7.

JOE NICHOLS - Critic's Pick

(Nashville Scene)

Nichols, a neo-traditionalist country singer from northwest Arkansas, will be releasing his fourth album later this summer. Nichols’ last album, 2005’s III, had the novelty hit “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off,” which could easily be the defining song of this crooner’s career. If that’s the case it would be a shame, as the singular burnished warmth of Nichols’ voice has wrapped itself around several far more notable candidates. Our vote would be for III’s “Talk Me Out of Tampa,” where Nichols communicates the kind of romantic ache that Glen Campbell once made so palpable and popular. In our country pop age, Nichols (who also gets a lot of mileage from his heartthrob looks) has to sell the funny tunes first. Maybe this new album will give people reason to talk about him other than as that guy with the tequila song.

Rascal Flatts Absent From No. 1 Party for "Stand"

Songwriters Danny Orton, Blair Daly Honored

By: Edward Morris
(cmt.com)

To the visible disappointment of many, Rascal Flatts failed to show up at the party ASCAP hosted at its Nashville offices Tuesday (June 26) to celebrate the group's most recent No. 1 single, "Stand." However, the guests of honor -- songwriter Danny
Orton and Blair Daly -- were on hand to take their bows.

Some in the media had been told that the much-awarded trio might drop in for the party but was not expected to grant interviews. Even so, television crews stood at the ready -- just in case. Jessie Schmidt, the group's publicist, circulated through the crowd looking alert, thereby fueling further speculation that the trio might be nearby.

With people craning their necks every time somebody walked in or an elevator door opened, it was like being in an in-the-round production of Waiting for Godot.

About a half hour after the party started, ASCAP's Mike Sistad called the crowd to order and invited the two songwriters forward. Because Orton is affiliated with ASCAP, he was the chief guest of honor. (Daly belongs to the competing performance rights organization, BMI.)

Since "Stand" was Orton's first No. 1, Sistad presented him the traditional first-timer's award, a monogrammed ASCAP jacket. Sistad also pointed out that Rascal Flatts has so far cut four of Orton's songs.

After the first round of trophies was handed out, Sistad paused to announce that Rascal Flatts and producer Dann Huff were still in a recording session and apparently unable to break away for the festivities.

"That was short and sweet," grumbled a TV producer as he picked up his equipment bag and headed for the door. "Well, it was short," someone responded.
